PROFILE

Someone with considerable influence whose disciples are said to number up to 3000, he is one of the few practical people in this group of nothing but quirky writers. He has a sort of parental love that patiently watches over talented people, but it seems he has some unpleasant memories about his former disciple, Dazai Osamu, and avoids talking about him. He is not particularly picky, but he cannot bring himself to like mackerel pike no matter what.

  • In his work titled The Romanticism of Mori Ougai (1949) Haruo proposed that modern Japanese literature did not start with the publication Tsubouchi Shouyou's Essence of the Novel (1885) but rather in 1884 when Mori left Tokyo to study in Germany.[1]
  • Gossip of the era claimed that Haruo owned about 3000 neckties, however in reality he owned only about 30-40 neckties.[2]
  • He died at age 72 due to coronary heart failure.
