Nakajima-san, you said earlier that you wanted to talk to me about something...

Nakajima Atsushi icon

Yes, since I respect you, Kyouka-san, I wanted to ask you this once.
What do you think is the meaning of being alive?

Izumi Kyouka icon

It's a question anyone considers at least once. What do you make of it?

Nakajima Atsushi icon

It's to meekly accept the circumstances with which we are presented without knowing the reasons behind them, and to carry on living ignorant of those reasons......
I believe it's something to that effect. *
A quote from Nakajima Atsushi's 'Sangetsuki'.

Izumi Kyouka icon

I feel a little differently. The world we live in is but one out of many.
I think it's better for us to find our reason for living depending on the world we are in.

Since, no matter where you are, you are yourself.

Nakajima Atsushi icon

... Are we really ourselves?
Even when, like in Kyouka-san's tales, we cannot tell the differences between dreams and reality?

Even when we are slowly being tainted by our own dreams...?

Izumi Kyouka icon

...Nakajima-san, what's wrong? Is there anything that's troubling you?

Nakajima Atsushi icon

......No, it's nothing.
I was just talking nonsense. Please forget it...

Izumi Kyouka icon

...Is that so? You can always consult me when something is wrong.

I can't turn a blind eye when someone is in distress.

Nakajima Atsushi icon

(I had thought that no one would understand how I feel......

If it's Kyouka-san...would he understand, I wonder......)

Izumi Kyouka icon

Yakumo-san, your Kwaidan is really well-researched. *
Izumi is probably referring to Koizumi's collection of ghost stories titled "Kwaidan (or Kaidan)" here. Kaidan is also the actual Japanese word for ghost stories. However, the conversation seems to expand to talk about ghost stories in general from here on out, so subsequent uses of the word kaidan will be translated as ghost story.

Koizumi Yakumo icon

I'm very fond of Japan's ghost stories and mysterious tales.
But, your fantastical stories are also 'complicated and bizarre'! Or so I think.

Izumi Kyouka icon

Thank you very much.
Lately, there has been a trend to consider such stories as made-up as well.

Koizumi Yakumo icon

That's right! It is very upsetting that ghost stories are considered mere superstition.

Izumi Kyouka icon

If I were to put it frankly, I feel unnerved. It's probably natural for mysterious things to be lost with time as civilization progresses, though......

Koizumi Yakumo icon

Don't be, Izumi-san! It might be like that now, but no matter how the times change,
people will always look to the mysterious as a way to explain the unexplainable.

Izumi Kyouka icon

So that's what you think, Yakumo-san?

Koizumi Yakumo icon

Fufu...... I've got it, let's have a ghost-story-telling party!
I'm sure everyone would still love a profound mystery now and then!

Izumi Kyouka icon

That's a great idea. I would love to hear one of your ghost stories, as well.

Ozaki Kouyou icon

Ah, Shuusei. It came to my knowledge that you and Kyouka had another quarrel - what happened?
Heavens...... Being pupils from the same hometown and all, can't you at least exist without being at odds?

Tokuda Shuusei icon

...... You must have heard about it from that guy. I have nothing to say about it.

Ozaki Kouyou icon

I do not despise that twisted heart of yours, Shuusei.
However, Kyouka will not acknowledge that twistedness. Basically, you two simply cannot get along.

Tokuda Shuusei icon

Everything would be fine if he just did whatever he likes.
But no, he has to go and butt heads with me.

Ozaki Kouyou icon

How shall I put this - in the end, he is simply concerned for you.
Just formerly, he was worrying himself, saying he cannot understand you at all, you know......

Tokuda Shuusei icon

Ugh...... I'm whatever about him.

Ozaki Kouyou icon

(Eh)...... Well, that is enough for now.
As long as you do not forget your duty as a pupil, I do not mind. You may go.

Tokuda Shuusei icon

...... Then, excuse me.

Kouda Rohan icon

Aren't you one of Kouyou's? Izumi, isn't it?
You sure look gloomy...... Where's your usual confidence?

Izumi Kyouka icon

Kouda-san...... Maybe you'll understand me.
I am troubled in thought. Kouyou-sensei is just so amazing, that as his pupil, I wonder what I can even do.

Kouda Rohan icon

Hmm... I see. Not sure if this will avail you, but I'll tell you about my Discourse on Efforts.
There are two types of effort. One is direct effort, and the other is indirect.

Izumi Kyouka icon

Direct effort and indirect effort...is it.

Kouda Rohan icon

Effort applied with all your might to what's right in front of you, and effort that becomes the foundation and source of your future.
It could be that you're studying too much under the master in front of you, and neglecting indirect effort.

Izumi Kyouka icon

...... That may be so, but to me, Kouyou-sensei's presence is just overwhelming.

Kouda Rohan icon

Right now, you're learning under your master, but sooner or later, you must journey along your own path. Without exception.

Izumi Kyouka icon

...... Words I would expect from lone-wolf Kouda-san.
I'll keep it in mind......

Izumi Kyouka icon

Oh my, you... Are you Hirotsu-san's son, Kazuo-kun?

Hirotsu Kazuo icon

It's been a while, Kyouka-san.

Izumi Kyouka icon

I could hardly recognise you. I never thought that the little pampered boy could grow up this splendidly.

Hirotsu Kazuo icon

Could you please refrain from calling me a "pampered boy". ...Now I'm a petty man of letters too, after all.

Izumi Kyouka icon

There's no need to be humble with being "petty" and so on. You've written works surpassing even those of your father's after all.
I'm glad to see you again.

Hirotsu Kazuo icon

Likewise. Now when I got to meet you again, I hope I can be of help to you from now on.

Izumi Kyouka icon

What an admirable attitude. Did you already go to greet Kouyou-sensei?

Hirotsu Kazuo icon

Yes, I did. Seeing me, he said recalling father's works, and talked long and long about the old days of Ken'yuusha... *
Kazuo's father Hirotsu Ryuurou was a member Ozaki Kouyou's writer society 硯友社 (Ken'yuusha). Thanks to the Hirotsu family living near Kouyou during Kazuo's childhood, he got to grow up surrounded by Kouyou and his students.

Izumi Kyouka icon

Is that so? Kouyou-sensei was delighted too for sure, to be able to see cheerful you again. *
Kouyou died the year Kazuo turned 12 years old.

Hirotsu Kazuo icon

Yes... He took good care of me. However, to Kouyou-sensei, I seem to always be...
A little child. He scolded me for this and that.

Izumi Kyouka icon

That's because Kouyou-sensei is a person who thinks of his students and friends, all as his own family.
You are, so to speak, the youngest child of the students group. It's natural for him to cherish you like his own child.

Hirotsu Kazuo icon

Uhhh... Yes.

Izumi Kyouka icon

If something ever troubles you, please come to ask for help any time. Got it?
