"Today's sake is going to be top-notch. Rather, I mean today's sake, too."
As a tanka poet and heavy drinker who was rumoured to have drunken through an entire case of sake in a day, he has both the atmosphere of an ascetic and the big-heartedness of a drinker. Possibly due to him drinking nothing but sake, his body is always feverishly hot. He does not seem to have any particular troubles, so he is often caught sighing blissfully as he gazes at wild blooming flowers while holding his favoured gourd in one hand. It seem he has gone through periods of time where he was very passionate about love.
- He was born Wakayama Shigeru, the son of a doctor in what is now Hyuuga city in Miyazawa Prefecture. His pen name, Bokusui (牧水), is comprised of what he claimed to be comprised of 'the two things he loved the most at the time'. 牧 was his mother's name, Maki, and 水 for the rainfalls in the valley near his home.
- He enrolled in Waseda University Department of Literature, where he became close friends with Kitahara Hakushuu (Kitahara Imizu at the time) and Nakabayashi Suzu. The three of them were called the "Sanzu of Waseda", because all three has the character 水 in their names.
- He loved traveling and looking at nature. He traveled across Japan, writing poems about each place he had visited.
- He died at age 43 due to acute stomach infection during a trip with his family. Alcohol likely contributed to his poor health and led to his death. There is an anecdote that days after Bokusui died, the body did not show any signs of deterioration even in the summer heat. The doctor was astonished, saying "He was so full of alcohol that it seems as if he was alive."
- Every year from 1996 onwards, Miyazawa Prefecture, his birthplace, in honor of Bokusui's accomplishments in life, awards the Wakayama Bokusui Prize to those who have made significant contributions to tanka.
- In life, Bokusui visited Chichibu Ward of Saitama Prefecture several times and composed multiple poems about it. At present, there is a waterfall in Chichibu Ward named after him.
