舞台「文豪とアルケミスト 嘆キ人ノ廻旋(ロンド)」
(Butai "Bungou to Alchemist - Nagekibito no Rondo")

Literary masters have been brought back to life in this world to protect literary works.
Akutagawa Ryuunosuke, who has fought countless of times the Taints reunites with his close friend Kikuchi Kan, a fellow member of Neo-Thought.
But before long, that rejoicing comes to an end when his mentor Natsume Souseki's "Kokoro" becomes tainted.
They must delve immediately and stop the book's tainting. However, Kume Masao, also a student of Natsume's, refuses to cooperate with Akutagawa and they end up delving separately.
Even after stepping inside the work of their beloved mentor, the two still can't bring themselves to work together.
Kikuchi and Edogawa Ranpo's counter-attack is no match to the Taints either, and they end up driven into a corner, but by Edgar Allan Poe and H. P. Lovecraft's efforts, the book is successfully purified.
The writers return to the library where Muroo Saisei and Natsume are waiting for them.
While side-eyeing the once like-minded Akutagawa and others praise the foreign authors and lively talk about the works from their previous life, the friction between them and Kume, who can't accept the foreigners, is growing greater...
In the midst of that, Kume suddenly disappears. At the same time, his work "Shipwreck" also becomes tainted.
While fighting against the tremendous negative energy, the attempt to delve into the book is also prevented by a barrier that is like as if Kume's will had given it a form...

(Butai "Bungou to Alchemist - Gesakusha no Sonata")

※ "Cheap fiction" (戯作, gesaku) is a literary genre that the likes of Decadent School was known for. It has long roots starting from late Edo period, and generally it was treated as light and humorous, even "cheap" kind of literature.

Literary masters have been brought back to life in this world to protect literary works.
Even while harboring empty feelings towards the fight no end in sight,
Oda Sakunosuke could join forces with the fellow Decacent School members Sakaguchi Ango, as well as Dan Kazuo.
The only one left is the central figure Dazai Osamu...
However, Dazai is nowhere to be seen yet.
Sharing the information with Proletarian writers Nakano Shigeharu and Tokunaga Sunao, a tainting outbreak occurs in "The Crab Cannery Ship".
For Oda who is feeling lost and unable to delve, Sakaguchi Ango stays there for him, and Dan Kazuo chooses to fight in place of the two.
At the end of the fierce fight with Nakano, Tokunaga and Kusano Shinpei by his side, they successfully purify the book. The writers return to the library where the two are waiting for them.
During the peaceful times spent with healing injuries from the fight, Oda feels inferior to Dan who talks about Decadent School he doesn't know of, and the days he had spent with Dazai.
Right there Kitahara Hakushuu, who had been transmigrated earlier, makes an appearance.
He talks about another library, where he had fought alongside Dazai to protect literature.
And that very moment, they confirm Dazai's whereabouts they had been searching for.
All of a sudden, something strange happens to Sakaguchi, and a dim light shines from "The Delinquent Youth and Christ"...

舞台「文豪とアルケミスト 旗手達ノ協奏(デュエット)」
(Butai "Bungou to Alchemist - Kishutachi no Duet")

Literary masters have been brought back to life in this world to protect literary works.
Among the fighting writers there was the White Birch School.
However, the long-continued battle against the Taint casts a small shadow on the glory of the seasoned fighters.
A tainting as if to ridicule them for being unable to find out the root for the problem spreads around, and turns from a small matter into a big dilemma.
That moment what crossed Shiga Naoya's mind was Kobayashi Takiji, who previously had faced a great enemy with his literature.
Grieving the harshness of the battle this time, Shiga was planning to transmigrate Kobayashi, but even during a time like that, the amount of tainted books was increasing...
Not giving up even during the approaching crisis, Shiga comes up with a plan to solve the situation. All alone, Mushanokouji Saneatsu was quietly watching him from a distance.

FAQ[]

  • Where can I watch the stage plays?

A legal way to watch any of the Bungekis is to buy the physical releases (DVD or Blu-ray), or watch official streamings from DMM TV (requires a paid subscription + VPN). At times there are official promotions where all (or most) of the stage plays are shown for free (or for a small fee), so make sure to stay tuned for chances like that by following the official Twitter account for any news.

  • Where can I buy the physical releases? Do they ship abroad?

We have listed several links for each stage play if you check up their "DVD & Blu-ray" sections. We try to link legal sites that we have used, and they ship abroad (some countries may be excluded). Some sites like AmiAmi, YesAsia and so on also tend to sell them for foreign fans, but availability of stock for them varies greatly.

  • What kind of bonus materials do the physical releases come with?

This depends on where you order your DVD or Blu-ray from, and do they come with some pre-order bonus. But all editions regardless of the site where you order from, they come with:
- A sticker set of the cast.
- A small booklet introducing the cast and the stage play (with some comments, and even lyrics of the theme songs starting from Bungeki 3's booklet).
- Two discs; first disc has the stage play itself. Second disc contains "making" of the stage play (as in "behind the scenes"), cast talk, and panoramic view of the "opening". The second disc's contents are limited to physical release only, and they aren't available on DMM TV or other official streaming services!

  • Are the stage plays subtitled?

No, the stage plays don't have any subtitles, not in Japanese or in any other language. Previews of Bungeki 3 and 5 have received official English subtitles for promotional use on Youtube, but otherwise if you happen to spot subtitles in English or any other language, they aren't official (legal) subtitles.

  • How do I use DMM TV to watch the stage plays?

DMM TV is official streaming service of DMM which was launched in December 2022, replacing the old DMM Video service which offered rental services. To use DMM TV, you must have a DMM account (which can be created by heading to DMM.com or by accessing DMM TV), and you need either a credit/debit card or something else to pay for a subscription (most common option for foreigners is PayPal). If you live outside of Japan, a proper VPN connection is also needed.

≫ Guide for creating DMM account and watching DMM TV ≪

1. Create DMM account (link to registration). Please do note that later on DMM will ask you to confirm your date of birth and age, and many of their services aren't available to minors (people below the age of 18)!

2. Register a credit/debit card (only Japanese cards work, foreign cards have been refused as of spring 2022) for your DMM account, or select any of the other payment methods available to buy DMM Points (DMMP). We recommend using PayPal, as it supports foreign cards and is safe. More payment methods will show up if you use VPN for accessing the points charging page. One point (1 DMMP) costs one Yen (1 JPY). DMM TV subscription costs 550 Yen/DMMP, so you are adviced to buy the 1000 Yen/DMMP set.

3. Upon successfully purchasing points, head to DMM TV, and either find a yellow banner with text 3ヶ月無料 ("3 months for free"), or from the top right corner of the screen click the featureless human icon, and there the button DMMプレミアム登録 ("Register DMM Premium"). You will need a VPN connection to access the purchasing page, so use your VPN of choice (we have introduced a free and good one on Troubleshooting page with a short guide how to use it). Do note that many of the popular VPN services like NordVPN, ExpressVPN, TunnelBear and so on are IP blocked by DMM TV, so don't bother trying them. Use some less known options instead, which are yet to be blocked by DMM.

4. On the premium purchasing page, you are prompted to use a credit card (クレジットカード), which gives you free trial for 30 days before you need to start paying for premium (limited to people who have Japanese cards). As a foreigner, your only option is to buy the premium and you get no free trial unfortunately. To use non-card payment method, scroll down the page and click クレジットカード以外 ("Other options beside credit card"). There you can select to use your DMM Points (DMMP) purchased earlier to buy for the premium subcsription, which you can cancel any time before the monthly renewal (within 30 days after purchase).

5. Proceed with DMMP as your purchase method, and you should be successfully registering DMM TV premium. Once you have the premium, either use any of the links on our wiki, or search with 文豪とアルケミスト on DMM TV to find the stage plays. Remember to have a VPN connection on when trying to access the content and while watching! In case you get access errors or the streaming lags, try connecting to another Japanese server in your VPN settings. DMM TV has official test streaming of Big Buck Bunny for free, which you can use to test if your VPN connection works with the platform.

  • Is there some order for watching the stage plays?

The most recommended order for watching the stage plays is to watch them in release order, as in number order. Bungeki 1 has the most simple storyline and it introduces a lot of important terminology, which are explained less in detail in later stage plays. Story-wise it's also the "starting point" for the series. Bungeki 3 is another one that can be enjoyed without having seen the first two, as the stage play director has stated that the Bungeki 3 is officially a sequel to 2, but also a prequel to 1, so this allows it to be seen as standalone story while also being connected to the previous instalments. Bungeki 2, 4, 5 and 6 are heavily connected to previous stage plays, so they mention content or writers that have appeared in other instalments (and even spoil some content of them).

  • Can I watch the stage plays without having played the game or seen the anime?

Yes, the stage plays are totally watchable even without prior knowledge about Bungou to Alchemist. But of course handling some character relationships or terminology (available on our wiki in Glossary) will be easier if you have even some background information about the franchise. Please do note that some of the characters are portrayed quite different in Bungekis than they are in the game or the anime; in worst case same character might be completely different in each media, which can confuse some fans if you are talking about the Bungeki versions of the characters to someone who isn't familiar with the stage plays.
